THE NITRATE AND NITRITE REDUCTASE ACTIVITY IN CABBAGE (BRASSICA OLERACEA  VAR. CAPITATA) AS RELATED TO NITRATE CONTENT MODIFIED BY DIFFERENT NITROGEN FERTILIZATION

Summary

The results of three year investigations concerning the effect of ammonium nitrate,
ammonium sulphate, urea and ammonium nitrate + urea (1:1) applied by the placement
and broadcast technique on the nitrate reductase activity, nitrite reductase activity
and nitrate content in cabbage heads have been presented. Fertilization of cabbage
with the reduced nitrogen forms caused stability of nitrate and nitrite reductase
activities determined in  the leaves. The largest decline in nitrate content in cabbage
was found in the placement treatments in 1995 and 1996. The effect of all fertilization
factors depended to a great extent on the rainfalls and insolation different in each
year of investigation. However, the positive correlation between nitrate and nitrite
reductases as well as between nitrate content and nitrate reductase activity
irrespective of climatic conditions and nitrogen fertilization was found.
