MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES IN PETALOID CYTOPLASMIC MALE-STERILE LINES OF CARROT (DAUCUS CAROTA L.) IN THE VEGETATIVE PHASE

Summary

The aim of this study was to evaluate phenotypic variation of four cytoplasmic petaloid male-sterile lines of carrot. During two years 
of experiments (2000 and 2001) several morphological traits (leaf and root size, petiole length, leaf division, cortex and core colour)
and the range of diversity were established. All analysed traits showed higher values (mean and range) in 2001 than in 2000.
The largest variation between CMS lines was recorded for leaf length. Variation of other leaf and root characteristics were smaller
or unsignificant. All populations had very coarsely divided leavesand similar degree fineness of leaves. The same tendency was
observed for root colour which was light to dark orange. Evaluation of variation allowed to establish the differentiation of all
determined traits between and within lines. Generally, the values of variation coefficient (V) were quite similar for all studied traits
in both years. The highest variation was recorded for petiole length, leaf and root width. No diversity in root and leaf length
reflects no genetic differences among plants within all studied CMS lines.
