STORED MUSHROOMS QUALITY AS AFFECTED BY SPECIFICITY OF FILM PACKAGING

Janusz CZAPSKI
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

Quality indices of stored mushrooms such as whiteness, color index, appearance, maturity and bacterial yellow blotches contamination of mushroom cap were determined. Mushrooms were stored 2 or 9 days at 1 oC and then at 13 oC in Xtend films bags recommended for packaging of fresh green beans, corn, cherries and as a control in commercially used Vitafilm bags. The length of mushrooms storage time at 13 oC affected their whiteness. From a whiteness point of view the best film to store mushrooms at 13 oC was Xtend film for green beans. The shelf life of stored mushrooms in Xtend film packages for green beans and corn was 3 - 4 days longer at 13 oC than those stored in Xtend film package for cherries and Vitafilm package. The mushroom appearance scores from other than Xtend film for green beans package was significantly reduces because of cap contamination by yellow blotches.
