EFFICACY OF BREWERY REFUSE EXTRACT AGAINST TOMATO POWDERY MILDEW (OIDIUM LYCOPERSICUM)

Summary

The watery extract of brewery refuse was tested against tomato powdery mildew caused by Oidium lycopersicum. Steam sterilized extract was applied at weekly intervals to treat susceptible tomato plants (cv. Corindo) in greenhouse experiments conducted in two seasons. The mode of action of the extract was also studied. The brewery refuse extract significantly inhibited the tomato powdery mildew while the severity of the disease was not very high, but when infection was high the efficacy of the extract decreased. This effect was connected to a contact action of extract against the pathogen. The observations of the fungus examined with a scanning microscope showed that its mycelium treated with the extract was destroyed. However, the hyphae and conidia, which had had no direct contact with the extract remained intact and they were probably a source of a secondary infection. It may have resulted from the increasing disease severity on the plants.
