EFFECT OF CULTIVATION METHOD ON STORAGE OF CUCUMBER FRUITS

Ryszard KOSSON and Józefa DOBRZAŃSKA
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

The effect of cultivation of greenhouse cucumber Aramis F1 on the rock wool and straw media, on storage in stretch-shrinkable packagings in the temperature of 12.5°C was studied. Cucumbers fruits for storage were sampling 5 times depending on intensity of fructifying. After each harvest time and storage period the cucumber fruits were evaluated for their: market value, weight loss and external colour. It was found that cucumbers cultivated on straw media and stored for 21 days in packagings in the temperature of 12.5°C were characterized by similar market value as cucumbers cultivated on rock wool. Fruit coming from the beginning harvest time or from the period of intensive fructifying - dates I-III - were better stored and their market value after 21 days of storage was higher in comparison to the cucumbers from closing harvest time - date IV and V. Weight loss after storage with or without packaging for cucumber grown on rock wool were similar to those cultivated on straw media. Changes of colour of stored cucumbers are similar for all fruits coming from cultivation on rock wool as well as on straw media.
