ESTIMATING OPTIMUM ROOT WEIGHT OF WITLOOF CHICORY (CICHORIUM INTYBUS L. VAR. FOLIOSUM) IN HYDROPONIC FORCING, AS AFFECTED BY OXYGEN CONTENTS AND FERTILIZERS APPLIED

Summary

The effect of fertilizing and aerating the culture medium on the growth of chicons in hydroponic forcing was determined in experiments conducted over the seasons 1991/92 and 1992/93. Chicory roots were placed in special containers, in which the contents of oxygen was kept on following levels, being percentages of the maximum oxygen contents: around 45 (control, without water circulation), 60 (limited circulation), and 90 % (continuous circulation). The forcing took place in plain water, in nutrient solution of calcium nitrate or complex fertilizer Hydrovit 300. The calculated rates of these fertilizers ensured the contents of 300 mg of NO3 per litre of the solution. Correlations between root weight, productivity of roots and weight of the chicons were analysed in the experiment by means of the curvilinear regression method and the LRP model, for the years 1991 and 1992. Productivity of chicory and weight of chicons depended on the type of employed fertilizers and did not vary with the different level of oxygen content in the culture medium. The productivity declined with increasing weight of chicory roots. The weight of chicons rose with the weight of roots up to a specific top value, and then gradually came down. The recommended weight of chicory roots was estimated as an optimum between the highest weight of chicons and the lowest losses in productivity. The preferable weight of chicory roots was best determined by the quadratic function. The optimum range of root weight varied from 158 to 335 g when calcium nitrate or Hydrovit 300 were applied, and from 193 to 348 g - when forcing took place in plain water, only.
