Summary

Extracts from seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) have been shown to be active insect feeding deterrents, toxicants and growth disruptors. The seeds contain azadirachtin, which appears to be the most active compound against insects. We have studied the effect of an extract from neem seeds on the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae L.) in a field trial. Two concentrations of the neem extract were used. Our results show significantly higher mortality among larvae on neem treated plants compared to the control. The weights were also significantly lower among the surviving larvae on neem treated plants. Damage on neem treated plants was significantly less than on untreated plants.
