POPULATION DYNAMICS OF SOME LEPIDOPTERA PESTS ON HORSERADISH

Jerzy SZWEJDA and Maria ROGOWSKA
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skiemiewice, Poland

Summary

Observations carried out between 1996-1998 at the experimental field of the Research Institute of Vegetable Crops in Skiemiewice and in two regions of the highest concentration of horseradish cultivation in Poland (Lodz voivodship) have revealed the permanent presence of three species of Lepidoptera pests: Plutella xylostella, Pieris brassicae and Pieris rapae , with the Plutella xylostella occurring in the field most early, Pieris rapae thereafter and lastly P. brassicae. All species decidedly preferred the cream-coloured horseradish as compared to the white one. During the whole observation period the number of caterpillars was significantly higher on the first type of horseradish than on the second one. In the regions of horseradish cultivation in the Lodz voivodship, two culminant periods of P. brassicae occurrence were observed indicating the presence of two generations whereas at Skiemiewice -only one culminant period. The permanent presence of the above-cited Lepidoptera species on horseradish plants proved that horseradish is an essential component of their range of host plants in central Poland.
