DORMANCY OF ONION AS INFLUENCED BY WEATHER CONDITIONS DURING THE GROWTH SEASON AND MATURITY DEGREE AT HARVEST

Maria GRZEGORZEWSKA
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

Moderate temperature and sufficient precipitation in July and August resulted in a slow falling-down and drying of onion foliage and thus in a slow ripening process of onion. In years with a slow rate of onion ripening, the vegetable remained in dormancy for a long time after harvest and was characterized by a good keeping ability. Instead, if it was dry weather and heat in July and August, the onion ripened rapidly, remaining after harvest in a short dormancy stage, and growing intensely into roots and sprout during the storage. As far as drying of foliage is concerned, onion harvested at initial stage of this process remained in dormancy longer than harvested after its completing. Onion coming from the earliest harvest time grew in roots and sprout significantly less than that from the latest one.
