YIELD OF FIELD GROWN PEPPER INFECTED WITH TOBAMOVIRUSES

Władysław MACIAS
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

Yielding of field grown pepper infected by pepper mild mottle tobamovirus (PMMV) or tomato mosaic tobamovirus (ToMV) was investigated. The following cultivars Bendigo F1, Ożarowska (both red-fruit, for protected cultivation), Telimena (yellow-fruit, for protected cultivation), as well as Hajduczek, Kraska, Kujawianka and Cyklon (for field cultivation, the last one - hot) were included in the trials. Plants were inoculated 7-10 days after planting in the field. Virus infections reduced yield of tested plants and ToMV infection was more harmful than PMMV. The strongest decrease was observed in the yield of I sort fruits, and next in marketable yield. In some years also total yield of pepper was affected. Quality of fruits from infected plants was lower - in some cultivars fruit wall thickness was reduced and additionally fruit malformations and discolorations (also on the inner surface of pericarp) occurred. Fruits were also more susceptible to fungal infections.
In all tested cultivars tobamoviruses infections decreased yield but the most sensitive were Cyklon and Kujawianka while the least Ożarowska.
