MORPHOGENESIS OF PATHOGEN CAUSING POWDERY MILDEW IN POLISH CULTIVATION OF TOMATO

Barbara DYKI
Research Institute of Vegetable Crops Konstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

Morphogenesis of fungus causing powdery mildew in Polish tomato field has been regularly investigated with the use of light and scanning electron microscope for a few years. There was measured conidia, conidiophores, appressoria and haustoria size of the pathogen. The fungus causing powdery mildew of tomato in Poland created on conidiophores single conidia or short pseudo- chains consisting of 2 - 4 conidia. This characteristic differs investigated pathogen with the fungus - cause of  powdery mildew in Australia, where there are exclusively chains of conidia created. That is why, the change of species name from Oidium lycopersicum to Oidium neolycopersici sp. nov. is needed in Polish phytopathological terminology.
It was found that the results of investigation on the pathogen are comparable to these of authors studying powdery mildew cause on tomato in other countries of Europe, America and Asia  in which epidemies of  this  disease has had its beginnings since 1988.
