RABA - NEW NAVY BEAN CULTIVAR, AGRONOMIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL PERFORMANCE

Lech BOROS
Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute Radzików, 05-870 Błonie, Poland

Summary

The characteristic of major agronomic traits and seed quality properties of Raba (RAH 899)  in comparison with two previous navy bean cultivars Bor and Mela based on eight location-years field trials and laboratory results are presented in this paper. Exceptionally high seed yield among navy bean with the high share of commercial seed in it, high protein yield, earliness and good field tolerance to major dry bean diseases were the main advantages of cv. Raba. Seeds of Raba hydrated at the most rapid rate. Water uptake was lower than that of Bor with little longer cooking time, especially after prolonged soaking. Consistency, texture of cooked beans as well as testa tenderness of Raba was not different from that of Mela and Bor. In taste preferential evaluation of cooked beans, Raba was distinguished as a preferred one.
