Summary

In 1981 and 1993, 20 populations of Avena fatua L. were collected and change in the percentage occurrence of botanical varieties abundance, in north-eastern Poland was evaluated. Flora shifts in the occurrence of four botanical varieties: Avena fatua var. fatua, Avena fatua var. intermedia, Avena fatua var. glabrata and Avena fatua var. vilis were observed during the 12-year period. A.fatua var. fatua and A. fatua var. intermedia decreased in occurrence from 31.4% to 14.6% and 28.4 % to 6.7% respectively. A. fatua var. glabrata and A. fatua var.vilis increased from 22.4% to 44.4% and 17.8% to 34.3% respectively. Herbicides use to control A. fatua and different susceptibility of botanical varieties at this species probably caused these flora shifts. In greenhouse experiments ecotypes of A. fatua var. fatua and A. fatua var. intermedia were better controlled with diclofop-methyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, tralkoxydim and haloxyfop-P-methyl than A. fatua var. glabrata and A. fatua var. vilis. The dose responsible experiments haloxyfop-P-methyl revealed the highest efficacy. Difference in control of A. fatua botanical varieties were obtained with different herbicides rates, and the differences were increasing for A. fatua var. glabrata and A. fatua var. vilis but not for A. fatua var. fatua and A. fatua var. intermedia. Those data suggest that more care should be taken to identify A. fatua varieties to be controlled with herbicide application in the field.
