MICROPROPAGATION OF ASPARAGUS (ASPARAGUS  OFFICINALIS L.)
I. MULTIPLICATION  IN VITRO

Summary

The experiments were carried out on multiplication ability of several breeding lines of asparagus in vitro. Four types of explants and two media were compared.
The best multiplication of shoots was noted when cultures were initiated from explants taken as parts of spears at edible maturity phase, each containing one lateral bud.
The studied lines multiplied fairly rapidly. In first passage on medium MS (Murashige & Skoog 1962) with NAA 0.1 mg(L-1 and BA 0.5 mg(L-1 (MS-2), the most proliferating line 1/89 F produced 5.2 shoots from 1 explant. On medium MS with NAA 0.1 mg(L-1 and kinetin 10 mg(L-1 (MS-1) all studied lines with the exception of the line 88/89 M, produced less than 3 shoots from one explant. In second passage the highest multiplication coefficient - 12.1 was found in line 88/89 M on medium MS-1. The majority of newly formed shoots were of 1 - 6 cm in length.
