EFFECT OF VERNALIZATION AND SOME GROWTH REGULATORS
ON SWEET PEA PLANT DEVELOPMENT

Mariusz CHOJNOWSKI, Mieczysław GRZESIK
Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture Pomologiczna 18, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland mchojnow@insad.pl

Summary

Three-year study was conducted to evaluate the effect of presowing seed treatment with cold (vernalization at 2°C for four weeks) or solutions of some growth regulators (ethephon 50 mg·L-1, gibberellin A3 100 mg·L-1, paclobutrazol 10 mg·L-1, indolilo-3-acetic acid 10 mg·L-1 and kinetin 5 mg·L-1) on seedling emergence and plant growth and development of sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus L. 'Charming'). In the first year of study seed treatment with gibberellin A3 fastened seedling emergence and induced its higher susceptibility to adverse environment conditions, while paclobutrazol delayed seedling emergence. In the next years there was no significant effect of vernalization or tested growth regulators on seedling emergence and survival. Presowing seed chilling (vernalization at 2°C) fastened plant flowering by 3.7 to 8.4 days depending on the year. Vernalized plants had higher main shoot and lower number and length of laterals. Growth regulators had no effect on date of flowering and studied plant characteristics.
