EFFECT OF PLANT TRAINING ON THE COURSE OF PHENOLOGICAL PHASES AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER GROWN IN UNHEATED GREENHOUSES

Summary

The investigation with cucumber cv. Sandra were performed during 2000-2001 in unheated greenhouses. The vegetation season lasted from July to October.
It was established, that loading of the main stem with different number of fruits (a plant training system) affected the development and productivity of both fruit setting zones - main stem and lateral branches, with no influence on the flowering outset and the commercial maturity of fruits.
The greater number of ovaries left on the main stem resulted in a higher number of fruits on it, but caused some delay in fruit development on lateral branches. In consequence a decrease of number and weight of fruits on branches was observed as well as some increase of non marketable yield was noticed.
Training the plant for 8 or more ovaries on the main stem did not guarantee priority to all of them, because the cucumbers have well expressed compensation (self-control) ability, which does not permit all left ovaries to reach a commercial maturity. The established differences were considerably determined by microclimatic conditions during the development of branches. In years of later drop of temperature, a certain delay of a plant grown was overcome and a higher total yield was obtained.
