THE EFFECT OF SURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION ON YIELDS OF CHOSEN VEGETABLE CROPS CULTIVATED IN VERY LIGHT SOIL

Summary

Productive results of drip irrigation in cultivation of chosen vegetables on the very light soil characterized by limited water capacity were investigated in 1991-2000. Field experiments on the following vegetable species were carried out: red beet, carrot, snap bean, squash, zucchini, iceberg lettuce, radish. The effectiveness of drip irrigation (ranging from 105 to 143%) was the highest for carrot, snap bean and red beet. The highest water use efficiency (WUE) was 233 kg and 212 kg of yield increasing per 1mm of applied irrigation for carrot and iceberg lettuce, respectively. Drip irrigation used on very light soils in central Poland was the basic vegetable yield-creating factor, securing stable yields of the vegetable crops tested. Irrigation decreased the nitrate content in edible parts of vegetables. The results indicated the decisive role of water on the outcome of yield and quality of vegetables cultivated on a soil of limited water holding capacity. The experiments proved that vegetables production on sandy soils was only possible with the use of supplemental irrigation. The drip irrigation measure of vegetables was cost-effective.
