THE DEVELOPMENT OF BULB ONIONS FROM SETS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

David E. O'CONNOR
Allium and Brassica Centre Ltd., Wash Road, Kirton, Boston, Lincs. PE20 1QQ, United Kingdom

Summary

The proportion of the crop grown from sets firstly replaced module grown transplants in 1980's and then continued to increase in 1990's to stabilise at around 35% of the total area. The demand satisfied with sets was to aid continuity from earlier harvest, improved quality and size distribution (targeting a 60-80 mm size) as well as enabling increased economy of scale for harvest machinery and some double use of stores. The main development has been with varieties and more accurate grading of sets. Alpha, Jagro, Rumba and Setton have largely replaced the old Sturon and Stuttgarter types. Heat treated Rijnsburger types have disappeared except for Red Baron grown from sets for early production only.
