ECOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS OF PHYLLOTRETA SPP., PIERIS BRASSICAE,  PIERIS RAPAE AND ATHALIA ROSAE OCCURRENCE ON HORSERADISH

Maria ROGOWSKA, Jerzy SZWEJDA
Research Institute of Vegetable CropsKonstytucji 3 Maja 1/3, 96-100 Skierniewice, Poland

Summary

The research was conducted in 1997-2000 at the plantation in Skierniewice located close to fields of other cabbage vegetable
and at Lipnik, southern Łódź district in Poland, in the farms growing horseradish for years. In the region of Lipnik cabbage
vegetable are not produced. Quantitative changes in populations of three phytophagous species i.e. large white butterfly
(Pieris brassicae), small white butterfly (Pieris rapae), turnip snowfly (Athalia rosae) and flea beetles from genus Phyllotreta
were investigated during vegetation period of horseradish, from planting till harvest.Basing on the observation data, differences
in occurrence of first and second generations of phytophages on horseradish were noted on both locations. These were as follow:
Pieris brassicae: Skierniewice - only second generation, Lipnik - two generations; Pieris rapae: Skierniewice - only second generation,
Lipnik - two generations; Athalia rosae: Skierniewice - 1-2 generations, Lipnik - two generations. During experimental years
flea beetles (Phyllotreta spp.) accounted for from 36% to over 83% of all collected insects. There were 6 species noted, Ph. undulata,
Ph. atra, Ph. nemorum, Ph. nigripes, Ph. flexuosa and Ph. armoraciae. All these species occurred only in one generation on both locations.
