WEED EMERGENCE IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF CARROT RIDGE PROFILE

Summary

The conditions for weed germination and emergence may differ within the ridge profile. Weed emergence on the top 
and sides of carrot ridges was studied in field trials in southern Finland (61°16' N 22°15' E) during 1998-2000.
Carrot was sown on sandy soil in ridges 49 cm wide. Weed emergence was assessed at 12 (in 1998 and 1999)
or 8 (in 2000) spots. The assessment was done in 0.5 × 0.5 m squares divided into three sections 20, 10 and 20 cm wide.
Chenopodium album, monocotyledonous weeds (mainly Poa annua) and Gnaphalium uliginosum emerged more abundantly
on the top than on the sides of ridges. The differences were statistically significant for C. album in 1998 and 1999
and for G. uliginosum in 1998. The effect of location on Thlaspi arvense and Matricaria spp. (M. maritima sp. inodora
and M. matricarioides) emergence varied. Stellaria media emerged each year more abundantly (mainly non-significant)
on the sides than on the top of ridges. In 1999 significantly more S. media emerged on the southeast than on the
northwest sides. For other species, the differences between ridge sides were non-significant. We conclude that
there are differences in weed emergence between the top and sides of the ridge profile. Weed emergence could
be reduced by making soil conditions disadvantageous for weed germination on the sides of ridges.
