ANALYSIS OF VEGETABLE CULTIVARS AVAILABLE IN POLAND DURING 1988-2000

Urszula BRAUN-MŁODECKA
Agricultural University of Poznań Szamotulska 26, Baranowo, 62-081 Przeźmierowo, Poland

Summary

From 1988 to 2000 in Poland 1535 vegetable cultivars were listed within 56 crops. The cultivars were owned
by both Polish and foreign breeders. The rate of increase of the total number of listed cultivars was approximately
67 cultivars per year. However, differences were noted depending on the crop. For the four vegetable taxa
of greatest economic importance the average numbers of cultivars listed per year ranged from 11.2 in the case
of red beet up to 45.3 cultivars for white head cabbage. Foreign companies dominated the Polish market of cultivars
of the most important vegetable species. The Dutch company Bejo Zaden B.V. surpassed other breeders in the number
of cultivars of white head cabbage, onion, carrot and red beet listed in Poland over the thirteen-year period.
